New Year Clown Experience 27th December - 1st January midday €250
Teacher: Clara Cenoz (please note: on this course participants may stay at Cal Clown until midday on 1st January) A chance to spend five days exploring elements of your clown, this course is aimed at all levels and will give you a chance to play, to explore and to discover new aspects of your clown, and it will be a space where we will share and debate our knowledge about Clown. You can also bring your Clown numbers if you have them, and we will watch them and work on them.
Introduction to Clown What makes us funny, which are the necessary elements to be a good clown and which is the secret formula of the clown to always have success. 30th November - 1st December €120
Teacher: Clara Cenoz We will explore the fundamentals of clowning: the pleasure of play, finding and accepting our failure; how to use our own ridiculousness in our favour. In other words, laugh at yourself and you will make others laugh! We will put on a red nose in order to remove our masks, to be re-born as clowns. We will admire each other for our stupidity and together will make fools of ourselves, enjoying the healthy craziness and innocence of the clown. We will work on the next concepts in practice: pleasure, flop, emptiness, the “not knowing”, the simplicity of the mental process of the Clown. We will explore, investigate and demonstrate what is it really that makes us funny, and what aspects we need to develop in our Clowns to make them work. We will understand the simple but effective formula to always have success as Clowns. A workshop aimed at those who want to discover or continue searching for their clown, for those who want to be freer, to accept themselves completely and to take full responsibility for their whole being, in order to be better Clowns. It could be a transforming and enlightening experience, and for sure a very fun and enriching time.
This is the course where we lay the foundations for the following courses, so we recommend you do this one, now or in the future, in order to understand fully how Clown works and to be able to build on that, up to creating your own numbers independently.
At Cal Clown we work on Clown in depth and rigorously, expecting from students commitment, passion and dedication, which is the only way, we believe, to achieve all the benefits of this profession/state of being, whether professionally or as a spiritual path. Making people laugh through Love is a serious business, in our opinion.
Clown Training 21st-22nd December €120
Teacher: Clara Cenoz
An opportunity to explore more in depth how the Clown works. We will learn to share our pleasure with the audience, to relate to them through our eyes. We will simplify our thoughts and actions in order to bring humour more clearly to the audience. We will let ourselves go so that we will learn to swim comfortably in our craziness, in our absurdity, knowing when and how to get the best from it. We will work with emotions, understanding how the Clown relates in different ways to them, from play. How the Clown can feel much yet not suffer, how one becomes a mirror to human behaviour, via pleasure. How attachment/detachment works with emotions and the relationship to humour. This course is for anyone who wants to eplore further their clown, and can be a continuation of the previous course as well as good preparation for the following ones.
How to Create Clown Numbers Different ways of generating material for your numbers Next Course: dates to be confirmed
Do you want to explore how to generate varied material in order to create finished Clown numbers you can put on stage? In this course we will look at how to generate ideas and numbers, using: the abilities of the student (or the lack of ability); the Clown monologue; Clown emotions; and Clown characters. Each student should leave with material to be working on and, especially, with the knowledge of how to generate new material in the future.
This course is ideal for: those who have you begun to discover Clown and want to start making their own numbers; those who have been working on numbers for a while, but who would like to improve their creative capacity and be able to generate a larger amount of material and of a variety of styles; those who want to create their own clown material at a more professional level; and those who have yet to work with text, emotions or characters from the Clown state.
Directing Clown Numbers 6th - 8th December €170
Teacher: Clara Cenoz This course focuses on the ‘rules’ and forms of comedy and what makes it work. We will work both on new material created during previous courses or on already existing ideas, or from the student’s own repertoire. In each case the objective will be to find the best form for the number to have a maximum comic impact on the audience. Most importantly, we will look at how to combine this knowledge with your own personal clown, and how to create well-made clown numbers without losing your own spontaneous clown stupidity.
You will take home a wide range of creative possibilities.
Includes a public performance at the end of the course.
Social Clowning Next Course: dates to be confirmed
What does a Clown do in a prison? How does a Clown move in a hospital? How can a Clown change social reality?
We will discover through play – individually, in pairs and in groups – how we can develop abilities such as confidence, listening and empathy which will help us to relate to, enjoy ourselves and play with a variety of groups in social difficulty. We will explore the ability of the Clown to adapt to any situation, and to respond in a positive and consistent way, allowing the Clown to become an agent for social change. We will learn about the characteristics of different groups and how to interact consciously with each.
We will devise short numbers to be performed. This is a practical course where we will make visits to perform in a prison, a hospital, a young persons’ residence and a retired people’s home.
No previous experience in Clown is required.
Clown and Silly Magic Next Course: dates to be confirmed Teacher: Gary Boardman (Clown, street performer, magician and fakir)
Are you one of those Clowns who has no idea how to do a magic trick well but who would like to use a simple one in your numbers? Do you want to learn how to do absurd silly tricks, more appropriate for a Clown tan for a magician? If complicated magic isn’t your thing, or you are simply no good at it or don’t have the patience, in this course you can learn some simple and fun tricks to put in your numbers. Widen your repertoire with these easy tricks which Gary has spent many years collecting, and which can be adapted to street, indoor venues and a variety of audiences. In this course Gary will share many of his range of resources – magic tricks, clown gags, silly circus techniques, and more – as well as how to work with the audience and ways of developing these elements so as to convert them into numbers.
No experience required in either technique (Clown or magic).
A practical course in a magical setting with morning walks through the nearby woods.
Clara Cenoz:Founder and director of the Escola de Clown since 2006, a centre dedicated exclusively to Clown. Clown, director and teacher of clown for the last 19 years. She has performed in and directed 7 shows for adults and 4 for children, touring festivals, theatres, streets, tents and bars throughout Europe, as a solo performer and with Jon Davison as Companyia d’Idiotes since 1993. She trained at L’École Philippe Gaulier.
Note from the director/teacher Clara Cenoz:
I will be delighted to share with you these workshops and the wonderful space which is Cal Clown. As usual, Iwill do everything in my power to help you to get to that state which we call “Clown” and to understand well how it works and why, since I believe in your knowledge, your wisdom and your ability to attain the wholeness which Clown offers. I will not spare any efforts, quite the contrary, you will have to stop me in order to have lunch or dinner ... I can only say that what makes me happy, among other things, is to see how students acquire that light which is so characteristic of having made the “click” on finding the Clown and the freedom and joy which that brings, and to see that, once again, another Clown has been born, a Clown who will lengthen the list of people who work to bring happiness and love to our world which, without doubt, it needs.
One-Month Professional Course
This course offers a broad training ranging from the pleasure of play, of life, which is the driving force of Clown, to the creation of Clown numbers in the final performance. We will work through the various stages of the Clown process: openness, pleasure, humility, freedom, craziness, ridiculousness, imbalance, status, generosity, the flop, intelligence and types of intelligence or stupidity, sharing with and giving to the audience, the mirror effect, the relationship with other clowns (solos/duos/trios/ensembles) and with the audience, admiration, sincerity, focus, surprise, energy, failure and success... How to speak as Clown? How to dress as Clown? How to think as Clown? Ways of creating a Clown number: from improvisation to a script, with text or without, traditional or contemporary, with or without music, with or without props. What is the difference between performing for adults and children, in the street and in the theatre? How to work from your own personality and knowledge in order to create a number. The rules of humour. The Clown and other disciplines (music, dance, circus, magic, etc., according to the student’s interests), and theoretical studies (history, analysis, theory).
This is a course that offers the possibility of understanding the Clown from the initial stages up to what is the aim of all clowns who wish to work independently: the creation of one’s own numbers, which will provide a basis for beginning and continuing to work prfessionally. Our objective is for the student to complete the course with their own criteria on what is Clown, having experienced a variety of contexts and teachers of differing styles, and feeling able to generate their own work and adapt it to a range of professional demands, whether in theatre, street, hospital, etc., and to different types of audience.

About Staying at Cal Clown
The fact of living together with people that initially do not know each other but who have shared interests is, we believe, both an enriching experience and a challenge for the student, a challenge that we think is positive for anyone who wishes to live and know Clown. Students will be provided with all that is necessary to enable them to concentrate exclusively on their training. There will be one free day per week when you can stay or leave the school. Those who wish to stay may use all the facilities.
The student will be required to bring:
Comfortable clothing for class work, warm clothing in the case of courses in winter and bathing costume in summer, a large towel (we provide small towels and communal shampoo and soap), any medicines or food supplement taken regularly, a torch, gloves, paper or notebooks, computer if you wish to work with one, camera or video camera if you wish, and any items of clothing with which you would like to experiment, as well as any props or instruments you may think useful.
If you play any instrument or practice any circus techniques, etc., it would be a good idea to bring your material with you.
Please also bring any video or graphic material of your own or others' shows that you may think will be of interest to share with the group, as well as DVDs of comedy films and TV series (of any period or country), or books on the subject of humour, comedy and clown.
The School has two bicycles that student may use (the nearest village is 20 minutes away by bike), but you are welcome to bring your own if you wish. On your free day we can take you to Figueres by car if you wish to take a train to visit cities such as Girona or Barcelona, and we shall also make some group trips to both cities in order to see shows and to find material for the course, and to do small performances when appropriate, as well as in the towns of Bàscara and Pontós.
During the course it is very important to respect a basic code of conduct. The bedrooms are shared and it is essential to allow all the group to rest and sleep in order to be in good condition to work. The times to be silent at night and to get up in the morning should be respected. All students will take on a variety of responsibilities, on a rotating basis, ranging tasks of organization to chopping firewood with your red nose on.
We strongly believe that this is a highly recommendable course, as much for the life experience it entails as for the training that it offers.
The price of the one-month course includes: course tuition, 8 hours per day, 6 days a week; accommodation in bedrooms of maximum 4 persons; transport to shows and to Figueres station on free days; the use of all of Cal Clown’s facilities, the house, tent and land, day and night.
